Non-Chemical Weed Control for Plant Health and Environment: Ecological Integrated Weed Management (EIWM)

چکیده

Herbicide application has long been considered the most efficient weed control method in agricultural production worldwide. However, long-term use of agrochemicals numerous negative effects on crops and environment. Bearing mind these impacts, EU strategy for withdrawing many herbicides from use, modern market demands healthy safe food, there is a need developing new effective, sustainable, ecological measures. To bring fresh perspective this topic, paper aims to describe important non-chemical strategies, including integrated management (EIWM), limiting seed bank, site-specific management, mechanical weeding, mulching, crop competitiveness, intercropping, subsidiary crops, green manure, bioherbicides.

True integrated weed management

Using the simplest of definitions, integrated weed management has been described as “putting components [of weed control] together, not taking them apart.” Yet, weed science has stopped at the “field edge” in assembling the components into a truly integrated approach. What is keeping weed scientists from developing real integrated weed control regardless of space and time? The answer to this qu...

Weed management: a need for ecological approaches

Agriculture is the process of managing plant communities to obtain useful materials from the small set of species we call crops. Weeds comprise the “other” set of plant species found in agroecosystems. Although they are not intentionally sown, weed species are well adapted to environments dominated by humans and have been associated with crop production since the origins of agriculture (Harlan,...

A Non-Chemical System for Online Weed Control

Non-chemical weed control methods need to be directed towards a site-specific weeding approach, in order to be able to compete the conventional herbicide equivalents. A system for online weed control was developed. It automatically adjusts the tine angle of a harrow and creates different levels of intensity: from gentle to aggressive. Two experimental plots in a maize field were harrowed with t...
